Calverton Miners welfare v Chesterfield XI

Shock horror the weather was decent on Wednesday night!! and what better way to spend the night that watching Calverton miners welfare v Chesterfield? hmmm don't answer that one! (Night in with Sophie ellis bextor anybody?)
Calverton play there football in the CMFL and at one point looked good for Promotion until it all went tits up.

I have now come to the conclusion that when somebody says " its a piece of piss to find, you carnt miss it" it inevitable isn't and you will. After a short trip round the village we ended up in the car park of the local working mans club and when asking if we were in the right place to see Calverton v Chesterfireld the lady replied " what at darts?" hmm not quite. we got dircetions to the ground and arrived shortly after maybe later we could take to the oche?
although it was advertised as a 7.30 ko, the board outside said 7.45 it actualy kicked off at 7.08 pm so bang went the pre match drink. As you can see from the below pictures the ground could be one of Nottinghamshires more scenic, although i don't thing i would Fancy watching a midd-week game here in January. there is a some shelter behind one of the goals with trees behind the other end and open on both sides.

This is one of those games when all the best bits happened on the first half. Calverton took the lead with a great own goal form Chesterfeild. Chesterfield then scored a well worked goal to draw level at which point the Calverton right back decided to throw a temper tantrum complete with swearing and all to which the ref quite rightly told him in no uncertain terms to shut it or he would be sent off. next up a spectator got a ball full in the face from about a yard out and was knocked out cold, he came round after a few minutes and seemed ok.

At half time we made a quick exit to the club house where we somehow got a metal badge, a pint of Carling and a bottle of lucazade for a total of £4.50 even though the price list says badges are £3,still i am not complaining it serves them right for kicking off early thats what i say! while in the club house got a copy of Nottinghamshires free sports paper, Ballsmania.(see below)you cant get it in Retford and Calverton is as northenly as i have managed to get a copy. It has reports on games from all over Nottinghamshire and lots of Adverts for strip bars and the likes in Nottighamshire as well as the famous Notts babe feature on page three. A paper for gentleman i think.

Chesterfield made it 1-2 in the second half.as the game drifted to its conclusion with the only action being when Calverton hit the bar from a free kick late on the the follow up hit the post.

I must give the ref a mentioned.very much in "the good old boy" mould of ref he controlled the game superbly from start to finish. talking with the players the whole time and controlling the game in a firm but friendly manor. He had a NSL Badge on his shirt (Nottinghamshire senior league) which is the lowest level of Saturday football in Notts. He should be in a much higher standard of football. It will be tough for a ref to better his performance this season.
